As I argued in an earlier column, political entrenchment has created a kind of no-man’s-land between the political left and right. Both sides often appear unwilling to meet in the middle or to genuinely understand one another’s perspectives. In this column — and the two that follow — I aim to help bridge that divide by identifying common ground for making positive, compassionate changes in society. In my view, much of our political conflict stems not from fundamentally different values, but from misunderstanding. Here, I argue that compassion should serve as the foundation for how we move forward as a country.

What is compassion?
