Ivan union county tax toon

In 2023, Union County homeowners saw no relief from ad valorem taxes despite a publicized 11-mill (1.1%) reduction in the millage rate. While the county board highlighted this minor decrease, they simultaneously approved a 20% increase in property assessed values countywide. The result? County residents faced a 10-12% increase in property taxes, while New Albany residents endured a staggering 20-24% hike—double the county’s increase.

Property taxes consist of two components: assessed values and the millage rate. The board’s focus on the 1.1% millage rate reduction obscured the far larger impact of the 20% assessment increase. Homeowners over 65 with a property tax freeze benefited from the modest 1.1% reduction. For everyone else, 2023 brought a significant tax increase in a single year.
