Can you believe we are in the middle of April, and before we know it the school children will be dismissed for the summer holidays. Where did this year go? The Junior/Senior Prom came way too quickly for this old Nana. I’m not ready for my older granddaughter to be a senior in high school, but she will be in the 2027 graduating class at Pontotoc High School. In my mind, Anna Morgan is supposed to still be playing outside and searching for roly-polies. When she was a child, she was amazed at the little pill bugs that would roll into a ball in her hand and then try to crawl on her arm. I have no doubt you have seen them in your garden or yard, but did you know they are not actually insects but are terrestrial crustaceans? That’s right; the roly-polies in your garden are more closely related to shrimp than beetles or ants.
I was thinking about today, April 15th in history, because it was in 1912 that the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. I’ve been researching the tragedy so I will be more informed when Dale and I explore Fairview Lawn Cemetery in October. We will revisit the sad tale of the great ship’s maiden voyage and tour the cemetery where many passengers were laid to rest. I thought it might be a good idea to sharpen my historical trivia as part of my preparation for our fall cruise to Canada and New England. It has been a few years since either of my grands were in third grade UFO class and studied the voyage of the Titanic. Unfortunately, the younger grand was in third grade when the pandemic hit and could not participate in an end of year Titanic party like her sister had done a couple of years before. I’ll never forget the sight of Anna Morgan, dressed to enjoy a 1912-themed dinner party on the Titanic, standing by the honeysuckle in my backyard. As I watched the child enjoying the fragrance and nectar of the woodbine growing along the fence, it struck me that she looked more like a little Southern belle. I couldn’t resist running out with my phone and catching some photos of her. I’m so glad I did! It is good to have pictures that jar memories, for me to enjoy, of my girls as they have grown and matured into beautiful young women.
